CSS Library News: From "The Thing" to "The Children's Nook"

14.1 inches tall
In 2001 we purchased a wonderful and very tall children's book: World Religions by John Bowker, and it has hung around the library in various odd positions.  On its front, on its back, even on its side.
Around 2007 John R. built our children's bench that fit between a couple of bookcases, but Bowker's book still had no where to stand.

"The Thing's" hidden closet

In the summer of 2015 planning for "the thing" began.  A place to hide the ladder and brooms that were hanging behind the bathroom door.  A place to store other things.  And something that would wrap around the existing bench and pillow transforming it into a children's book and reading area.

"The Thing" and original bench

After measuring and re-measuring, planning, meeting, thinking, cutting crazy angles, moving the large piece about the shop, and hours of other unknown efforts performed by Michael A., the portion we came to call "The Thing" was maneuvered into place in February.

March 26, 2016 the library's largest volunteer project came to an end: "The Thing" was transformed into the children's nook.  The arm rests arrived and the four sections were locked together.  At last our tallest children's book has a special place to stand with its mates.  And most important the nook has a sense of enclosure and is very comfy.

We're very grateful and humbled by the way Michael has chosen to support the building fund by using his volunteer efforts to eliminate expenses, and at the same time enhance the library for the whole CSS community.
