The Tao of Pooh

The Tao of Pooh

by Benjamin Hoff

Penguin Books, New York, New York     © 1982      158 pp.

In this easy and fun read, principles of a world religion (Taoism) are revealed with the help of the endearing characters (Pooh Bear and friends) and illustrations of A.A. Milne's stories for children.

The intro offers a brief view of Lao-tzu and his teachings in the Tao Te Ching of learning from and working with whatever happens in everyday life. Then we learn about P'u (the Uncarved Block, simplicity, things in their natural state - similar to Pooh's simple-minded approach), Wu-Wei (allowing the natural unfolding of life as in the Pooh Way), and Tz'u (compassion in the heart being a source of courage and wisdom, as with Pooh's belief in his inner knowing about how to rescue his friends in a pickle).

This book can engage the child in each of us, yet provide us as adults with conscious ways to simplify our living as we did so naturally in childhood.
