Malcolm X

Malcolm X: A Graphic Biography

by Andrew Helfer, illustrated by Randy DuBurke;

Hill and Wang, New York, New York © 2006 ; 107 pp.

This is a very well-done graphic biography of Malcolm X. It takes us from his early violent childhood, and shows us the ways in which his experiences shaped him as a man and as a leader. The book lays out the phases of this great man's life. The graphic drawings are quite arresting. They vary from closeups to distance, from level to angled, from clear to grainy. They mesh seamlessly with the text and vice versa. At times they seem to have been copied from news articles published at the time. This book is a perfect way to get a sense of the rise and fall of an outstanding black leader.
