Feng Huang is a small girl who tries and fails to draw a Phoenix. Seeing her from her perch on a star, the Queen Phoenix flies to help her. She allows Feng Huang to draw her during a day, then flies away. Later she returns to give the girl a list of things to do in order to know the powers of the Phoenix and so to draw one. The list begins by requiring that she find the Phoenix of Wisdom, who tells her, "To have Wisdom you must pass through the fire of Ignorance! Draw away all Ignorance!" And she does.

Several Phoenix appear, each one faithful to the Phoenix character, yet beautifully unique. Terse teachings run throughout the book. A lovely spiritual adventure.
