Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa: Angel of the Slums

by Lewis Helfand, with Sachin Nagar, Illustrator

Campfire: Kalyani Navyug Media Pvt Ltd, New Delhi, India, 2013.    86 pages

This graphic biography of Mother Teresa ends with the first steps toward her being declared a saint by the Roman Catholic Church. The rest of the book shows why. It chronicles her life from childhood to death. It is an amazing tale of faith, kindness and dedication. When she stepped down from her position as head of her order, a decade before her death, she had opened 350 houses of the Sisters of Charity in 57 different countries. She received bushels of awards for her work.

The artwork is worthy of mention. It is, appropriately, artfully done. It varies from true-to-life closeups of Mother Teresa to brief brushstrokes for the faces of suffering. The book is easy on the eyes, nicely turned out.
