Review of The Mirror

The Mirror: Advice on the Presence of Awareness

by Dzogchenpa Namkhai Norbu

Station Hill Openings, Barrytown, New York, 1996. 80 pp.

The Mirror is a compact and very clear (in spite of the process of two translations between the author and us) discussion of dzogchen. As the subtitle indicates, the author explains the interaction of awareness and presence, together with compassion, calm and movement and the way they lead to realization through meditation and daily life. Interestingly, the text in English is 21 pages long, with a 23-page commentary, 62 scrolls of the original Tibetan text reproduced on 21 pages of this volume, and a 16-page introduction by the editor. The commentary elaborates on the teaching in interesting and helpful ways, but the teaching of the text stands nicely on its own. This is a very fine and helpful teaching on the direct path to Realization.
