Quote from Science & Civilization in Islam

Science & Civilization in Islam

by Seyyed Hossein Nasr

The Islamic Texts Society, Cambridge, United Kingdom.  1987.   388 pgs.

"The final stage of science is the 'subjective' realization of 'objective' knowledge which itself lies beyond such a subject-object distinction.  A change must take place within the soul of the knower; he must cast aside the ordinary consciousness, by which man lives during his everyday life, in order to become illuminated by a new form of consciousness which, until the moment of effective realization, lies hidden and latent within the soul.  His theoretical and discursive knowledge must become immediate and intuitive. . .  All the arts and sciences that the human mind can master cannot replace or even lead to gnosis, if these disciplines are regarded as independent modes of knowledge. . .  The 'prayer of the gnostic' is to 'see' that the knowledge of each particular being and each domain leads to the knowledge of its ontological cause, to see in the arts and sciences the vehicle and support for the realization of gnosis."
