Quote from Sufism

Sufism: A Wayfarer’s Guide to the Naqshbandi Way

by Sheikh Amin Ala ad-Din an-Naqshbandi & Dr. Muhammad Sharif Ahmad, Translated by Muhtar Holland

Fons Vitae, Louisville, Kentucky, 2011.  320 pp.

It is therefore quite clear that Sufism, since it guides us toward constant remembrance, is guided only by the Noble Qur’an and the teachings of true Islam. . .

It is also clear that true devotion [taqwa], which signifies the path of Sufism to the attainment of hope, has the Noble Qur’an as its source. It is mentioned approximately two hundred times in various forms in the Noble Qur’an. (p. 49)

7. Thankfulness [Shukr]

Thankfulness [shukr] is the expression of good pleasure with His blessings (Glory be to Him) and the employment of the tongue in remembrance and praise of Him (Glory be to Him).

Thankfulness is another station among the spiritual stations of Sufism. These stations are derived from the Qur’anic verses of Allah (Glory be to Him), or from the pure Summa [of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace)], and they are signposts for the progress of the believers. They ascend to a special position in Sufism, inasmuch as these qualities and stations become permanent traits, characteristics, and properties, enjoyed by the heart of the believing Sufi. (p. 89)
