Princess in the Land of Snows: The Life of Jamyang Sakya in Tibet

by Jamyang Sakya & Julie Emery

Shambhala Publications, Boston, Massachusetts & Shaftesbury, England, 1990        349 pages

Our monk-teacher, Tenzin, gave us reading assignments and then stepped outside the classroom to his quarters across the hall of Thalung Monastery. We children sat cross-legged, facing one another on two long rugs, but out of each others' reach. We read from our block-printed loose-leaf religious books and then chanted the memorizations at the tops of our voices. Uncannily, Tenzen always knew if one of us had stopped reciting, immediately sensing a missing voice, even though we were out of his sight. (p. 1)
