Touching the Infinite: A New Perspective on the Buddha’s Four Foundations of Mindfulness

by Rodney Smith

Shambhala Publications, Boulder, Colorado, 2017            269 pp.

We have formed our lives from feelings, thinking they hold the legitimate truth of the experience. We believe feelings are coming from us and not derived from a sequential pattern of causal conditions. When we bypass the connection between the formation of feelings and the experiences we are having,we will claim each mental and physical response as self-generated. “I believe this and am feeling that,” but where is the “I” within this toppling line of conditioned dominoes? The more subtle areas of reality, like feelings, are usually bypassed since we are more identified with our reactions than our feelings. In other words, if we are not interested in how the dominoes fall, we will only know ourselves as the end product after they have all collapsed.   (p. 146)
