Quote from A Kabbalah and Jewish Mysticism Reader

A Kabbalah and Jewish Mysticism Reader

by Daniel M. Horwitz

The Jewish Publication Society, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 2016         592 pages

In Affective Kabbalah (see chapter 1) the goal of the Kabbalistic ritual is not to fulfill God’s need, but strictly to respond to human needs. It is sometimes referred to as “white” magic because its goal is to accomplish something positive rather than to cause harm. Where the mystic differs from the magician is in his commitment to a religious truth even higher than whatever material goal he seeks to accomplish. Nevertheless, some mystics were willing to use magic to reach these goals. (p. 295)
