The Spheres of Islam, Iman, Ihsan & 'Irfan
Habib 'Abd al-Rahman Balfaqih
Dar al-Turath al-Islami (DTI), Western Cape, South Africa, 2014. 81 pages. When pronouncing the statement of Divine Oneness (kalimat al-iklas), or example, which is the foundation of all foundations, the people of Iman say: "La ilaha ill'Allah (there is no God except Allah." Their understanding is: "there is no diety worthy of worship other than 'Allah." The understanding of those on the path of Ihsan is: "there is nothing sought other than Allah." The understanding of those in realizaton of 'Irfan is: "there is nothing existent other than Allah."
When pronouncing the Basmalah, for example, which is the beginning point of every state, people say "in the name of Allah." the people of Iman, the first level, are attached to the meaning. The people of Ihsan, the second level, internalize the meaning. The people of Irfan, the third level, truly realize the meaning. -- page 20
